Garden
Something snapped in me a few years back. I was tired of feeding hungry souls while bodies left hungry.
Our after school program was certainly fun, but the boxes of sugar loaded sweets made it hard to settle down and get homework help.
Food is so simple. But it’s one of the most transformative tools for life change we have. What else do we partake in multiple times a day?
Depressed? Anxious? Burdened? Exhausted? Stressed? What have you ate the last week? How have you spoken to your body? What we put in our bodies matters-big time.
Those in faith circles often struggle the most taking care of these bodies we’ve been given. My hunch is the heresy of Gnosticism has found its way into our thinking and living once again. (Gnostics believed everything about the body was sinful. Therefore, bodies should be punished. The here and now had no value.) Even as someone who is passionate about nutrition and it’s accessibility I still find myself devaluing the here and now. Sure, I’ll grab another fry or coke or whatever. My passivity to my present ends up only leaving me more anxious and unfulfilled.
When it comes to taking care of our bodies I wonder what we are all still waiting for?
These gardens fed a little community all sorts of fresh veggies. Certainly, more could be done. Not all meals came from the ground. But, we celebrate the small moves towards wholeness.
What are you waiting for today? Eat a carrot. Change your life. I’m not kidding.
